URGENT: Multiple Suicide Bomb Attacks in Pakistan Over the Weekend

WIN PRAYER ALERT

Suicide bombers launched a coordinated attack in Lahore, Pakistan on Friday, March 12, 2010. At least 45 people were killed and nearly 100 wounded. It was the second attack in Lahore in less than a week. There were also reports that smaller, “low-intensity” bomb attacks – as many as 9 – were carried out though the weekend. Another Taliban attack took place on Saturday, March 13 in the Swat region of northern Pakistan, killing at least 14 people and wounding 50.

The Taliban has taken credit for two devastating suicide bombings that took place in Lahore, Pakistan on Friday, March 12, 2010.

On Monday, March 7, the Taliban destroyed a security agency building in Lahore, killing 13. A spokesmen for the Taliban threatened they would conduct 3,000 suicide attacks all across Pakistan if the military did not immediately curtail its attempt to capture or destroy members of the terrorist organization.

Several of the top leaders of the Taliban have been arrested or killed recently in an accelerated military campaign by the Pakistani army and Allied forces.

The bombings carried out on Friday, March 12, were set off within 20 seconds of each other. Two motorcycle drivers rammed into army vehicles and set off their explosives.

Lahore is the capital of Punjab province and is considered the cultural center of Pakistan. Until the recent outbreak of attacks, it managed to avoid much of the violence that has plagued the nation.

In the past year, terrorist attacks have killed hundreds of civilians in Pakistan. In Lahore alone there have been 180 deaths.

Another Taliban attack took place on Saturday, March 13 in the Swat region of northern Pakistan, killing at least 14 people and wounding 50. On Sunday, Pakistani military forces killed 17 militants in an airstrike on a Taliban hideout in the northwestern tribal region.

In the latest Lahore attacks, coordinated bombers killed 45 people and wounded nearly 100 others. This is the second suicide bombing in less than a week. There were also reports that smaller, “low-intensity” bomb attacks – as many as 9 – were carried out though the weekend.

Pakistan is ranked number 14 on the Open Doors World Watch List for worst persecutors of Christians. WIN partners pray for Pakistan on Day 28 of the WINDOW INTERNATIONAL NETWORK Praying Through the Window 9: Global Terrorism and World Religions prayer calendar.

PRAY FOR:

an immediate end to the deadly attacks in Lahore and throughout Pakistan by terrorists and any insurgent groups. (The Bible, Proverbs 22:8)

the Taliban and every terrorist organization operating in this region to be defeated, its members arrested, and the organizations or any that would try to replace them would cease to exist. Pray for the Lord to expose their schemes and plots and that all future suicide bomb attempts would fail. Pray for an immediate end to all terrorists and insurgent funding, an end to arms supplies, and anything they would use to build suicide bombs. (The Bible, Psalm 7:6)

protection for civilians, the military, and Christians who are being targeted by these attacks. (The Bible, Psalm 18:2)

Pray Muslims will turn away from Islam and be drawn by the Lord into a relationship with Jesus Christ. (The Bible, Colossians 1:13)

the Lord to give the government of Pakistan and the Allied forces wisdom and discernment in defending against and defeating all forms of terrorism. (The Bible, Jeremiah 33:3)

the Lord to visit Pakistan in great power, displaying His glory, bringing His Kingdom with signs and wonders, dreams and visions, and leading multitudes to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord today. (The Bible, Hebrews 12:28,29)
